Matthew Scharkie
Producer - Mid North
Matthew's journey began on a family sheep property in South Australia's Mid North. After training as a Diesel Mechanic and exploring the mining industry, he returned to his roots in 2014, joining forces with his wife's family to manage a sheep and cattle station.
Their property focuses on self-replacing Merinos, catering to both wool and meat production, alongside a mixed Hereford/Angus cattle program. Matthew actively oversees day-to-day operations, managing land, assets, livestock, and running a small transport business. Recently acquiring a sheep property, he aims to establish a profitable and low-maintenance venture.
With over a decade of hands-on experience, Matthew has been instrumental in developing a shearer training facility in Jamestown. Coordinating learner schools, he contributes to Shearer Training Australia's growth. His involvement spans various agricultural events, including organising competitions and chairing the Jamestown Shearing and Wool Handling Nationals since 2019.
Matthew's strong mechanical and engineering background led to purpose-built facilities, including stock crates and training centres. Passionate about sustainability, he emphasises knowledge-sharing and technology adoption, envisioning an efficient, tech-driven industry with innovations like the Wool Bale E-Bale system and cutting-edge shearing modules for enhanced traceability and animal welfare.
