The SA Red Meat and Wool Blueprint 2030 is developed by industry for industry

A collaboration between industry, government, researchers and professional service providers, the South Australian Red Meat and Wool Blueprint 2030 is the industry’s strategic plan and roadmap.

The 2030 Blueprint vision is for:

A progressive and sustainable South Australian red meat and wool value-chain, that is connected and adaptable. Together, we are empowered to capture market opportunities and to continually improve the wellbeing, productivity and profitability of our livestock, people and land”.

The 2030 Blueprint:

  • Aligns with key national and state strategic plans, including the National Sheep and Beef Sustainability Frameworks, Red Meat 2030, CN30, Wool 2030, Carbon Farming Roadmap for South Australia, and SA State Emissions Reduction Strategy.
  • Amalgamates 6 strategic plans that Livestock SA previously managed and supported which included the SA Sheep, Beef and Biosecurity Blueprints, Sheep and Cattle Industry Fund Management Plans and the Livestock SA Strategic Plan.

Organised by 5 key pillars: Our livestock, Our environment, Our market access, Our people and Our industry, the 2030 Blueprint guides and ensures our industry’s success through 16 priority areas within these pillars and 37 key targets that the industry is striving to achieve by 2030.

The 2030 Blueprint is supported by the whole value chain. Livestock SA is charged by industry to drive its delivery and currency.

The first blueprint was developed following the success of the LambEx event held in Adelaide in 2014 where it was recognised that the South Australian sheep industry would benefit from a prosperous and dynamic industry along the entire value chain.

The original 2015-20 plan was reviewed and built on to create the South Australian Sheep Industry Blueprint 2030, which was informed by extensive consultation with producer groups, meat and wool processors, transport and industry organisations as well as state government agencies.

Based on the success of the South Australian Sheep Industry Blueprint, a plan for the state’s beef industry was developed – the South Australian Beef Industry Blueprint 2028 – to position the industry to capture the benefits that exist in growing demand for premium beef. It too was developed with input from across the value chain and detailed actions needed to ensure the SA beef value chain can sustainably increase revenue.

Due to the success of the SA Sheep and Beef Blueprints, a SA Livestock Biosecurity Blueprint was also developed in 2022. This Blueprint's vision was for a livestock industry with the systems, capability, and capacity to minimise the risks of, and maximise preparedness for, endemic and exotic pests, weed and disease incursions.

Together the SA Blueprint Working Group which is composed of sheep, beef and wool producers, wool and meat processors, livestock agents, livestock consultants, livestock researchers and government personnel have implemented the Sheep, Beef and Biosecurity Blueprints. The group has strategised the best implementation of the Blueprints to ensure targets are met and gaps are identified. They have ensured the ongoing collaboration between industry, government and researchers to help guarantee the Blueprints are used to align research goals, leverage funding for the benefit of the SA sheep and beef cattle industries.

With many common goals and a need to better align and focus the livestock industry’s efforts, it was determined that a single strategic plan would best serve the industry. The SA Red Meat and Wool Blueprint 2030 has now been developed to guide the investments, policies and programs needed to deliver our industry’s vision.

The SA Sheep Industry Blueprint was reviewed in 2020. The review of the SA Sheep Industry Blueprint highlights the achievements and growth the industry has accomplished while providing recommendations for future objectives to further progress the industry as well as recognising the industry’s progress during the term of the Blueprint, with significant growth, improvement, and support achieved.

The South Australian Sheep Industry Blueprint has:

  • Helped align and support extensive data collection, which was not previously available through MLA (Meat & Livestock Australia), PIRSA and the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).
  • Helped achieve a 35% increase in Gross State Revenue, which was 15% higher than originally targeted.
  • Established a single Sheep and Beef Working Group, which fills the dual role as a regional committee of SALRC
  • Become an influential framework that has been recognised and referenced by other
  • industries
  • Facilitated a culture of cooperation, collaboration, and co-investment among participants
  • Instigated reform of the SA Sheep Industry Fund and SA Cattle Industry Fund
  • Provided an avenue for increased engagement with the SA Government. For example, Ministers have been involved with the Blueprint process and referenced the Blueprint in official communication
  • Demonstrated that we have a strong and coordinated livestock industry in SA that has a plan for the future
