Future Livestock Leaders Announced for 2024

Recipients of Livestock SA’s 2024 Future Livestock Leaders Program have been announced. Second year agricultural science students Jarred Hutchison and Alisha Carter have been selected from a pool of high calibre applicants and will start the industry immersion program next Monday, 4 November 2024.

Jarred Hutchison grew up on a beef, dairy, and thoroughbred horse farm in South Africa, developing expertise in animal husbandry and climate-focused livestock care. Having recently interned at a feedlot in Parham, Jarred aims to enhance his leadership skills to drive sustainable practices within the industry. He looks forward to the opportunity to expand his professional network and gain insights into sustainability and innovation.

Alisha Carter has a solid foundation in her family’s cattle and sheep operations, having purchased her own cattle in 2021. Actively involved in Royal and Country Shows, Alisha is passionate about growing her herd and building her career as a stock agent. She’s eager to explore industry trends in livestock breeding and market preferences, bringing back knowledge to her operations.

Livestock SA CEO, Travis Tobin said the organisation was looking forward to hosting Jarred and Alisha next week and that it was great to see more young people passionate about the livestock industry looking for development opportunities.

“This is the third successive year we have run the Future Livestock Leaders Program with the number of young people applying for the week-long experience increasing every year.”

“We were thrilled with the level of interest this year and the calibre of the applicants.”

“The program offers an intensive schedule of mentorships, site visits, and networking events, including the Livestock Industry Dinner on 7 November.”

“It is structured to give recipients exposure to various organisations across the livestock industry, showcasing the diverse career paths and roles that drive our sector.”

“Livestock SA is committed to supporting young leaders in agriculture and providing valuable insights into the work undertaken by the organisation and fostering growth in advocacy, policy, and sustainable practices.”

“Our industry’s future relies on passionate and capable leaders. Programs like the Future Livestock Leaders are essential in equipping young talent with the skills, connections, and insights needed to capitalise on the opportunities and overcome the challenges in our sector.”
