The South Australian Beef Industry Blueprint
A plan for the sustainable growth and profitability of the beef cattle industry in South Australia is in development. The SA Beef Industry Blueprint will focus on collaborative value chains, consistently meeting consumer and community expectations and adoption of proven practices to increase productivity.
The beef industry is very important to SA’s economy and employment, with beef cattle herds a major component of land management within the state. SA’s previous Beef Industry Strategy 2005-2015 Directions for SA focused on increasing production by 15%, from 10% less land, equivalent to a 28% gain in terms of efficiency. Significant gains were achieved through factors such as increased pasture utilisation, and an expanded feedlot industry. For example, there is now an over 30,000 head feedlot capacity in South Australia. This represents a major expansion in our feedlot industry relative to 2005. Moreover, 2015 production was some 22% above 2005 production levels.
The SA Beef Industry Blueprint will be aligned with the National Beef Industry Strategic Plan (BISP 2020) that has been developed through Cattle Council of Australia and the Meat Industry Strategic Plan (MISP 2020). It will also be strongly aligned with state government priorities on Premium Food and Wine from our Clean Environment.
SA already has a very strong foundation on which to build with many active producer groups and regional initiatives, for example the Limestone Coast Red Meat Cluster and the Fleurieu Beef Group. In addition stakeholders across SA are involved in several research and development projects with aims focused on increasing productivity and product quality with benefits accruing throughout the value chain.
The SA Beef Industry Blueprint will look for whole of value chain engagement
The question to South Australian producers and stakeholders throughout the beef value chain is what do you want to see in a 10-year action plan for SA’s beef industry? And what will be your role in that plan?
Building Better Regions Fund boosts the SA beef cattle industry
The South Australian Beef Cattle Industry will benefit from the Coalition’s Building Better Regions Fund with $30,000 from the federal fund being awarded to Livestock SA for the development of a South Australian Beef Cattle Industry Blueprint.
