The workshops will support increase landholder participation in commercial kangaroo harvesting. They will demonstrate the skills and competencies required, gauge farmer interest in commercial kangaroo harvesting and help develop understanding of the commercial opportunity available through becoming either field harvesters or chiller managers.
Livestock SA is coordinating landholder engagement focussing initially on producers in Western Eyre Peninsula. Should these workshops be successful, a broader program will be run out across the commercial harvest zone.
For the Western Eyre workshops, Macro Meats will coordinate information, mentor and demonstrate sessions with interested landholders and will support participating landholders to undertake the mandatory training and establish their field processing operation, including the provision of field chillers where required.
Interested participants will be supported to become licenced Kangaroo Field Processors.
As part of the program, they will complete the TAFE SA Certificate in Game Meat Field Processing and Firearms Proficiency Course for Kangaroo Field Processors. This training provides instruction on humane animal welfare harvesting practices. This is essential to maintain industry integrity in trained professional harvesters and to undertake such activities.
After the introductory meeting, participants can continue further with a licensed shooter, to gain an understanding of what is required, and if this experience is of interest, they are able to complete the TAFE course mentioned above.
